Look who's in Colorado!

Baseball seniors Elliott Alston and Nick Wiggins both hail from Littleton, Colo. and are home on break, so they decided to come to our game and support their fellow UMES student-athletes.  It was great to see them and I think it was neat for them to see UMES all the way out in Colorado. 

I asked them both how they were enjoying break and what they were doing and got a similar response from both - "sleep until noon-ish, workout for a few hours, play videogames."  Well, at least they're working out.  :-)

Earlier today Coach Allen and I went over to the WESM studios on campus to tape a public service announcement that will be airing the rest of the month.

Coach taped about a one minute segment discussing prostate cancer in preparation for a free screening and education event on Sept. 29 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center.

Coach sure is a pro at this kind of stuff! He didn't want to do a dry run or anything, "let's just do it."

Bret & Nick's view from the press box during the women's game. Those stands were jam-packed for the men's game.

Bret interviews Coach Allen before tipoff of the men's game. The Burr Gymnasium had various different levels and you see here one of the many staircases. We had to go down a few hallways and stairs to find the locker room... it was like a maze!

You sort of see how packed the building was during intros. It was the last home game of the season/Senior Night for the Bison and the fans were there... loud and proud!

Lots of UMES fans drove up to D.C. for the game... they were also super loud and proud to support their Hawks! Here I snapped a quick pic of them during an OT free throw. The Hawks definitely sent their fans home happy!

Freddy Obame Obame was awesome with Bret and Nick, talking about Libreville, Gabon, his basketball experience, soccer, his role on the team and his French-speaking capabilities.

Hillary "Pop" Haley spoke with Bret about his connections with NBA stars Kevin Durant and Ty Lawson, where his nickname came from, his play this season and the small lineup that the Hawks produce.

COACHES' CORNER RADIO SHOW

In the past few weeks, Bret and Nick have been busy preparing to debut a new weekly men's and women's basketball radio show. Today was the official debut of the show, hosted on 540 WGOP AM radio out of Pocomoke. Usually the show will be located at the Hawks Nest (inside the Student Services Center on UMES campus), but with the winter break, the Hawks Nest is closed. This will be great for fans because then they can come watch the show live and meet the coaches and their guests!

Today, however, we had to host out of the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center and our cozy conference room. Head coach Frankie Allen was unable to attend because he's on the road recruiting so assistant coach Mike Blaine took his place this morning. He talked with Bret and Nick about the schedule so far and his view on this weekend's matchup with Florida A&M.

Kevin White (aka "Mr. Bathrobe") was also a guest on today's show and discussed growing up in New York, playing at Technical Career Institutes, what brought him to UMES and his outlook on the season.
